Historic Hobart, with its convict past, was often referred to as Australia’s neglected backwater. How times have changed as its temperate climate, quiet lifestyle and fabulous food and markets make it a revitalising tourist destination along the Derwent River in Tasmania.
The city’s significant maritime history begins at Constitution Dock, situated along the waterfront and facing the beautiful harbour. Nearby Battery Point and affluent Sandy Bay feature Georgian and Victorian architecture and the first settler’s cottages in Australia’s 2nd oldest city.
Escape to a memorable view of Hobart town from the snow-covered Mount Wellington or get close up and personal in the city’s quaint streets. Hobart comes alive during the colourful Salamanca Market, held every Saturday morning, where you can bag a bargain or sample mouth-watering produce such as local wines and cheeses.
Cascade Brewery and Cadbury’s Chocolates have tours of these Tasmanian icons or visit Wrest Point Casino, a popular event and entertainment centre.
The annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in December and Tulip Festival in the Royal Botanical Gardens swells the population in this small capital city. Make sure you check Booking.com ahead of time for your colonial cottage, cosy B&B or waterfront apartment.
Hobart is a city full of history and life. Unlike many cities it has kept it's small town feel while having the many of the amenities that you would find in a much larger city.
You don't even need to rent a car to spend time in the city as most places are within walking distance however if you do be careful the streets can be rather confusing.

Hobart is an incredible city for its size, jamb packed with incredible food, beautiful architecture, spectacular markets and harbour. It's a short drive to Huon Valley and the incredible apple orchards.
Mt Wellington is a spectacle and a great location for beautiful photos.
It's a city that should be on your list to visit.

Hobart is a nice city for around one day.
Hobart is a nice city for around one day. I was here cause I had a tour planned departing from Hobart. The city itself is not that exciting so one day is more than enough to see the city centre. Of course, if you want to visit the MONA museum or hike up Mt Wellington you need some more days. My tour guide also said that there are a lot of nice vineyards/wineries in the surrounding area so have a look for that if that is something you like!

I really enjoyed this city but I am more of a small town vibe. Bumi coffee's sambal chilli scrambled eggs was the highlight! Sadly did witness/experienced 3 incidences of potential racism towards Asians though...

Richmond was worth a look at the convict bridge and quirky shops. The old jail was interesting. Salmon ponds were good and lunch of pancakes there was delicious! Russell falls was very pretty. Needed more than a day to see all that Hobart has to offer.

Hobart was full of interesting buildings and places to visit...
Hobart was full of interesting buildings and places to visit, particularly Constitution Dock (Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race) and MONA. It was a good place to take day trips to Bruny Island or Port Arthur and other notable places. The Salamanca Markets is a must. I was surprised at how hilly it is.
Spacious, well equipped apartment with luxury finishes and amazing views of Hobart and the local harbour. We stayed in the Western penthouse so enjoyed the sunsets over the mountain in the afternoon. The CBD is a short 10 min drive away or if not driving you can catch a ferry from the end of the street direct to Salamanca, Its easy and cheap to get an Uber back home later on. There are also a few restaurants/takeaways, and a supermarket close by if wanting to relax at home.
Hadley's hotel is one of Hobart's oldest hotels. It is therefore characterful and you feel transported back in time in some ways with the decor (it was partially renovated just a few years ago in a period style). Staff are pleasant and helpful, and the hotel has a bar. Rooms are quiet and there is a decent mini bar. Its location is good as its right in the Hobart CBD but not far from the harbour, a five minute walk away.
Beautiful modern spacious warehouse style apartment with lovely red brick right in the centre of Hobart. In the CBD, & 2 mins to the waterfront. Great location. Apartment is modern and light filled. 2 double rooms both with own bathroom which was great. Large comfortable lounge area. The host was accommodating to late check out. The apartment is in the top floor of a small office building.
Our room was in a self-catering apartment across the road from the hotel. It was perfect for our needs- quiet, walking distance to Hobart's attractions or the bus to take us to where we wanted to go. Close to Elizabeth St mall and a grocery shop. The staff were friendly and worked hard to make our stay happy. There was no lift in the apartment but we were happy to climb the stairs.
The location was fantastic, it was nice and close to the waterfront (hence the name) so close to Salamanca Wharf and Constitution Dock. Easy transport from the airport as the bus stop for the Sky Bus is about 50 meters from the hotel entrance. Plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby and everything is within easy walking distance. A great spot to stay if you're visiting Hobart.
Lovely view of Mt Wellington from our room on Level 4.
Great location close to Salamanca Place and all the shops and restaurants of both the Hobart waterfront and Battery Point. Free hotel parking is an added bonus
As this was our third stay at Lenna, we were familiar with its amenities and service - Lenna is our preferred place to stay when visiting Hobart.
The service of this hotel is really good!! I was staying with friends in the family room and we need an extra bed, then they gave it without an additional fee. And also we got a parking spot for 2 cars. Very friendly and helpful staff. I will come back to stay here if I go to Hobart again :)
Great little self contained apartment. Everything we could possibly need was provided, and we appreciated having a washing machine. Great location close to Salamanca and short walk into the CBD. Comfy bed. The apartment looked like it was recently updated and was nicely appointed.
I had two stays at this hotel, before and after a tour of the island. So, some of this is similar to my other review.
Reservation and desk staff are helpful. The hotel location is good, "next door" to Woolworth's grocery and a short walk to the waterfront for restaurants.
My partner and I had an amazing 4-night stay in this hotel on 9th floor. The location was a bonus as it was both close to CBD and waterfront with spectacular views of the ocean from our room. The Room was clean and our bed was comfortable. I definitely recommend it.
Apartment had a washer dryer & a very detailed welcome packet!
Great location to the Hobart waterfront, lot of things in a walkable distance.
Restaurant in the front looked packed for breakfast but unfortunately we couldn’t secure a reservation.
Beautiful new fully furnished cottage with plenty of space for the whole family. Large kitchen so we didn’t need to eat out every night. Very friendly owner who welcomed us. Worth the 15 min drive into Hobart and close to MONA.
Excellent location in the heart of Hobart close to shops, restaurants and grocery stores. Quiet in the evenings but lively during the day. Large, spacious apartment in a historic building. Walk up to the 3rd floor.
Nice new modern apartment, plenty of space to breathe and relax after a busy day of sightseeing. Amazing location, so much amazing food nearby and a central spot to get around Hobart and other spots in Tasmania.
Very large and spacious 2 bed apartment with main bathroom and additional toilet / vanity. Good location within walking distance to all Hobart has to offer. Clean and good facilities. Would stay again.
Professional, friendly and helpful staff. Great size apartment , full kitchen, large bathroom, 2 toilets. Extra bedding. Not central Hobart but only a very short walk to waterfront and CBD.
